Scroll Exhibition Opening

  • Benedicta Arts Center 37 College Avenue South Saint Joseph, MN, 56374 United States (map)

This one-of-a-kind letterpress scroll, created in 2020, celebrates the enduring legacy of the Rule of Saint Benedict through the lens of female artistry and reverence. Originally commissioned by Richard Bresnahan as part of a collaboration for his new sculpture, the scroll was designed, printed, and illustrated by hand in St. Joseph. It is the result of deep collaboration with the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict, with each of its 18 images—carved, hand-painted, and adorned with gold leaf—honoring the region, local artisans, and the Sisters who inspired this work.

After its debut, I embarked on a mission to share this piece widely, showcasing it across the country—from a Monastery in Alabama, to a print conference in Northern Wisconsin, and all summer at the Laramie Public Library in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Proudly, I raised the funds with the support of President Bruess to commission the Saint John's Abbey Woodworking team to build a stunning, portable display for the scroll that can break down and fit into the back of my Subaru! Every element, from the intricate design of the sacred text to the craftsmanship of the display, speaks to the power of women, tradition, and community.

Join us at the Escher Lobby of the Benedicta Arts Center on the campus of the College of Saint Benedict from 5-7:00pm on Octber 17th, 2023.
